If you’re looking for something unique to do in Maribor, then the underground wine cellars of VINAG should be on your list. These cellars, located under the city center, are among the largest in Europe, with a history dating back to 1847. Spanning over 15,000 square meters and boasting 2.1 km of underground passages, the cellars house around 144 wooden barrels, concrete tankers, and bottles with wine patina, all with a total capacity of 3 million liters. The most precious feature of the cellars is undoubtedly the wine archive, which stores bottles of the best vintages. After exploring the underground labyrinth, visitors can head to the tasting room for an educational wine experience and even purchase wines to take home.

What to do in Maribor

Maribor is a city of significant importance in Slovenia, serving as the second largest city in the country. The city has a rich history, with its first recorded mention as a castle dating back to 1164, and its development as a settlement in 1209. Maribor was granted town privileges in 1254 and has since grown to encompass an area of 40.98 square km. It is not big, but big enough for 113,778 inhabitants that call Maribor their home town.

In Štajerska we don’t say ‘Keep the change’ we say ‘Vreji je’ and I think that’s beautiful.
